Frolic in brine, goblins be thine

Horror movies don’t scare me. They haven’t since I was a little kid. Ring has been hyped up a lot so I went into it wondering what would happen. Yes of course like everything it has been over-hyped but don’t let that take away from the movie itself. Within the first ten minutes there was an air of tension that stayed there for the entire movie.

The last ten minutes gets to be the exception which proves the rule about horror movies. That was freaky.

Life is a game. So fight for survival and see if you’re worth it!

I’ve just watched Battle Royale. Before I go any further I would like to make a statement for the record.

Battle Royale is fucking awesome

The plot is simple. The Battle Royale Act calls for a random school class to be taken to an island and armed. They must fight to the death until only one person survives. Carnage ensues. The 110 minutes of this film are ultra violent and hugely compelling. Its nothing like you will find in mainstream movies these days.

The tag line on the dvd is very simple and gets to a major part of the movie very quickly:
Could you kill your best friend?

More thoughts later maybe, time to watch Ring.

gotta have Faith

Ah 🙂

Eliza Dusku will be in 3 episodes of the next season of Angel and 5 episodes of the next season of Buffy aswell as the sequel to Bring it On the imaginatively titled Bring it On…Again

Please don’t go.

The very first song I remember liking (if we discount finding out about Michael Jackson when I was around 8) was KWS Please Don’t Go. It was sometime in the early 90’s. I would guess at 1991. I don’t remember where it was that I heard it, but I really liked it. I wound up buying The Greatest Dance Album In the World…EVER or something along those lines simply because it had this track on it. I remember buying it at Golden Discs in Artane Castle and my mother asking me if I had heard any of the other songs and if it was worth it. I said I had, but I was lying to get her off my back so I could just buy it. It turned out to be a really good purchase. It had a lot of other really cool stuff on it. I still have the tape back in Dublin somewhere and still listen to it…or at least I did back there.

Its a good song and I just found an MP3 of it on a cd I had burnt a while ago but not listened to recently.

From the depths of my emptiness

Last night was a typical Friday night….well it turned into one when I got out of work. Before that point it was most certainly not.

Around five ish last night was finishing up normal stuff for the weekend, making sure all my changes were saved and all checked in correctly. I followed the exact same procedure I have always done for this. However something somewhere was wrong and the log window I received was well wrong. Not just a little wrong but hideously wrong. Instead of just looking after my work, it had changed things for the entire global projects teams.

Cue a couple of frantic ims stateside…no joy. Cue a couple of frantic phone calls stateside…no joy. Eventually I got through to someone who would be able to contact the right people. Of course it its the Friday of a long weekend in the US and lots of them are taking time off.

At this stage the log is looking worse and worse by the second. So the conversation goes something like this.

US: “blah is in a meeting at the moment, I know where he is”
me: “I think you might want to go and get him”
US: “I think I’ll go and get him, hold on”

So we got someone on the line who knew the systems or at least had people who worked for him that knew the systems and left it in his hopefully more than capable hands.

At which stage I sent a mail with the log, the steps I had used and my out of hours contact number and headed for the pub. It is a) the weekend and b) my boss is away on holiday otherwise I’d have given him a ring. I can wait till Monday I guess, all further work has been suspended for a few days.

A typical Friday night then ensued. Just the four of us down there but we had some drinks and some laughs. Of particular fun was the argument over who played Clarice in Hannibal, with one of the lads phoning up his local video store and Blockbuster to ask them if they knew or would mind going and checking on the shelf. Unsurprisingly they were busy and unable to help 😉

Cue attempted internet access from the pub corner. A massive effort involving one palm pilot, one PDA and four internet capable mobile phones. It was really quite funny, what was even more funny was that despite the four of us have the tech to get online and indeed working the relevant departments we failed miserably.

In the end we just phoned a friend and it was indeed Julianne Moore. We laughed 🙂

After that with one of the lads heading home the rest of us headed across the road to Pizza Express for some dinner. A nice pizza was had alongside some nice cheesecake, coffee and a whiskey chaser. It was all good.

What was better was the gorgeous girl sitting right opposite me. Not just opposite me but as there was three of us at a four seater table and the spare seat was directly in front of me everytime I looked up I was looking straight at her. Oh the horror. She had a friend with her aswell and when there was just two of us left finishing our drinks as the other fella had to get a train we briefly considered ya know doing something fucked up and actually talking to them, but well didn’t. Which is a shame because she seemed really nice and they had at least acknowledged our presence earlier in the evening.

So we finished our drinks and headed home our separate ways. I got in around eleven and while I intended going straight to bed, I ended up watching another episode of CSI and then sleeping for close on 12 hours straight.

I have this complete urge today to not do anything at all. Ideally to be able to go to bed later tonight without having put on shoes and socks at any stage. But I think I have to go and get some food for tonight and I want to collect my comics and I’m thinking that I really want to go and see Insomnia

And because I haven’t done this in a while:

Apple to release Rendezvous as open source

die puny humans is Warren Ellis‘s weblog. Interesting, debuts at number one on blogdex and number three on Daypop. Its mainly links to stories and photos being used for Warren’s research so far. Zander Cannon oh Top Ten fame on the other hand is writing a blog about his experiences having just moved to Japan and its really fascinating reading. Of course not forgetting Neil Gaiman and Peter David

Netscape 7 gets a full release just a few days after Mozilla 1.1 is pushed out there.

Spplat Attack: the largest ever paintball game takes place today with teams lead by William Shatner.

One in four employees has a serious Web habit, spending more than one entire workday each week surfing non-work-related Web sites while at their desks.
Internet addicts surf on work time

It must be Friday

I have this strong urge to go down to the second floor and slap various people across the head. Our social list-serv is having a “lets post all the bad jokes we can think of day” and they are really really bad.
For example:
Q: What is ET short for?
A: Because he has little legs.

Two peanuts were walking through Central Park. One was assaulted.

You see what I have to put up with?

Weekend is looking good and quiet at the moment. My dvd of Ring arrived from Play this morning and a friend in work lent me Battle Royale so I’ve got two highly recommended Asian “Cinema Extreme” movies to watch alongside the last disc in the CSI set. I’m so very tired that a quiet weekend is very welcome.

However tomorrow night I think I kinda have to go to a gig of a collegues brother’s band. I said I would a while ago when I first heard about it. I guess I’ll see how it goes. I don’t really want to right now but maybe I will by tomorrow. I have to get some comics tomorrow afternoon anyway.

Garbage are a good band, they have released three very solid albums. Ok the third one took me a little while to get into but its a very solid album. My first introduction to them was on MTV about 7 years ago. I can’t remember which song I heard first it was either Queer or Stupid Girl. Either way I enjoyed the track and kept an ear out for some more. Liked the second track and picked up the album. As the follow up albums came out I picked them up as well.

So earlier in the year I saw them live in Bristol on one of the first nights of the current world tour. Despite everything else that happened that day it was an excellent gig. They played for about two hours and played all of their best stuff from the first 3 albums and a couple of covers. If you ever get a chance to hear them cover Wild Horses you should, its truly fantastic (MP3 available on request)

Last night I saw them again with a friend from work. While not as long a set this time, it was closer to the ninety minute mark, it was again excellent. They really come into their own live. From being a good solid rock band, on stage they just have this phenomenal energy bringing them to a whole other level.

The venue was a complete surprise, it was tiny. I would say there were only a couple of hundred people there. It was all standing and we were maybe 15 feet away from the stage. I can’t remember the last time I was so happy to be tall. I didn’t see anyone even close to my height and I had at least six inches above everyone in front of me so my view of the stage was pretty damn good.

Shirley Manson, the lead singer never really did all that much for me but she is sexy as fuck on stage. Next to the word fit in the dictionary is a picture of her. The stage was much smaller than Bristol where she spent the night running and jumping around but there was enough space for her to move and boy did she move. Ok ok it helped that she wasn’t wearing anything under her light white top.

Queen Adreena as support were pretty damn good. I’d been listening to and enjoying their latest single Pretty Like Drugs and they litterally kicked it off as we reached the bar next to the stage. It went onwards and upwards from there. I will have to be buying some of their music. The lead singer can be and indeed was described as Bjork on crack.

All in all, a fucking good night.

Pretty Like Drugs

And it turns out that the support for Garbage tonight is expected to be Queen Adreena who I’ve heard so much about over the past few weeks. Sweet, I hear they did a really great set last night so I look forward to tonight even more.

🙂
