A couple of things of note so far. I picked up two Radiohead ‘mini-albums’ each with 8 tracks issued in Japan only. This has made me happy. I’ve also managed to get some nice Manga I had not been able to get in London or Dublin, Adolf book 1 and DevilMan book 1.

Picked up some good luck charms and stuff like that at one of the shrines we went to today. Got a few duplicates of stuff to bring back for people and one as a making the peace present for someone.

Really tired. Its been a hell of a few days. Patrick has just fallen asleep on his bed and doesn’t look like he plans on moving anytime soon.

I spent a couple of hours this evening wandering around Shibuya on my own. It was awesome. I just walked looking for cool stuff to catch my eye. It was a hell of a lot of fun. Of course I got lost several times but always managed to find a train station. Given that most stations have at least 6 entrances and exits and indeed one of them (Shinjuka has 60!) it is pretty hard to not be near a station.

Space really is at a premium here. Floor numbers are the big thing. I don’t think I have seen a single building yet which just contains one store. Within the city itself, there is almost another minicity below. The stations can be massive, 3 or 4 times the length and width of a football field and indeed can be 3 or 4 levels.

Mobile phone penetration here must be running near to 100%. They are everywhere.

Yes, in what would appear to be the only true spirit of Tokyo, I am rushing through lots of things. My ‘Rough Guide’ does warn me that first impressions of the city can be off putting and indeed they are. After a few days I guess I am more use to it, but the city does not seem to come together. I know that Tokyo is actually 23 cities all merged into one, but even one of those cities doesn’t pull together. There seems to be a heart and soul missing and it is strange to not have it. Maybe it is just me, it all just seems so rushed, so artificial and sterile. It’s a city, it has no life.

Note, the building on the right is not reflecting anything, it is a giant video screen.

Where to start?

Well yesterday morning we got up at about 6am. It was not fun. We had a quick breakfast and headed into Shinjuka to catch a bus to Kawaguchi. Shinjuka is one of the newest and most modern areas of Tokyo. It was in fact part of the inspiration for Bladerunner. Photos to come. Getting there involved taking the subway during rush hour. Until now, I would have taken the subway here over London any day. Everything is clean and runs exactly on time. Well rush hour is a different story. There are people employed to stand on the platforms at the train doors and to push people in. We were quite lucky in that we got on an empty train not due to leave for another five minutes. Just before it did, it packed up and trust me you don’t know the meaning of the phrase packed up until you have seen this. And just when I thought no-one else could get on, the queue was pushed onto the train.

Kawaguchi is one of the ‘Fuji Five Lakes’ at the base of Fuji-san. W It took about 2.5 hours to get there by bus, not even Tokyo is exempt from road works. We drove through some absolutely stunning countryside. I have never Autumn look better than it does here. The trees are just stunning. We basically drove through the mountains for over an hour and it was all woods everywhere you looked.

Anyways we got there and after some trouble sorted out tickets for everything we wanted. Well that’s not true exactly. It is out of season and we were not able to get anywhere near to the mountain itself. Even the first few camps were closed. A disappointment but not entirely unexpected. So we had a boat trip around the lake and then took the Ropeway (cable car) to the top of a nearby mountain and took some photos.

After another bit of just wandering around we grabbed a bus back into Tokyo. This was a little more of a scenic route and it drove about half way around Fuji-san giving us some more views of it and of a couple of the other lakes.

We got back into our hotel shortly after 8. We were both completely and utterly shattered. We had been planning to go out with my sister and some of her friends. Nothing starts in Tokyo till well late. We had provisionally arranged to meet at midnight and take it from there. The earliest you can get home from a night out is around 5am when the trains kick off again. Well anyway we weren’t up for it.

There is of course a ‘however’ at this stage. I was lying on my bed just relaxing, glad to have a load off my feet and the line of thought was to never move again. The other line of thought was along the lines of ‘Fuck it. I am in Tokyo and it is a Friday night. I don’t care how tired I am. I am going out for the night’.

So I did. I rang my sister and arranged to meet up with her. We met in Shibuya. This is the going out district for the Japanese (and the gaijin in the know). We started off in the a bar called the Lime House. You order some food and get a drinks menu with it. You pay something like 1000 Yen (the Y is silent by the way, it is actually pronounced ‘en’ with not much of the ‘e’. ) This works out to be about £5 for a hour. Given that drinks include pitchers of beer and Jim Beam whiskey, this worked out well. This is also the spot for students to hang out, and the place was filled with mainly foreign students. Mairead knew quite a few of them and we ended up with a group of people.

Then we moved on, a club called Fai was doing a 70’s night and it was cheap in with some drinks included in the price. We arrived there and stayed till about 4am. It wasn’t bad at all. I did find it amusing to be in a night club in Tokyo on a Friday night dancing to Abba and Michael Jackson, but hey!

When we finished there, we hit a 24 hour restaurant kinda place for some quick food and coffee for me. I was pretty much asleep on my feet. I had sit down in the club at one stage, closed my eyes and I was asleep. Then just after 5 off to the train station and back to the hotel. I stood on the train and not once, but three times did I fall asleep. If I had not been holding on to a handle on the roof, I would have fallen over. It was not good. Anyways back to the hotel around 6am and slept for about 6 hours.

The photos have been resized hence the lower quality. Galleries with high quality to come when I get back to London.

Whoo hoo blogging via email is working. That will allow me to type out some stuff and leave it in the outbox. Should make things easier for me.

It is about 6:30 in the am and we are about to set off to see Mount Fuji.

I have no idea what day nevermind time it is anywhere in the world except Tokyo. Lots of stuff to talk about, I got a really nice camera for a damn good price and I am happy about that.

Went out for dinner and drinks and a chat with my sister. It was surprisingly good. We now have a plan to do Disneyland Tokyo on Sunday which could really really rock.

Very mixed opinions on the city so far. More to come later.

Right so then Ted, I’m in Tokyo.

It still hasn’t really set in, but I am lying on my bed in a hotel in Tokyo. The flight was uneventful and not too bad. No upgrade unfortunately, but we got seated at an emergency exit and that was not too bad at all. Watched one movie which possibly qualifies as movie of the year, Donnie Darko. Truly stunning. More on that later.

We are meeting up with my sister in about an hour and I’m off to get a digital camera so I can put some photos here. First impressions are Tokyo is a very disjointed city. No two buildings are alike. Its all a mish mash of stuff.

I figured out what I was so nervous about and indeed it is still and will continue to be a problem. Language. I have never been anywhere before where I could not carry on a conversation. My only foreign language country to date has been France and I studied French for six years. Even coming through customs, etc. was intimidating and they all spoke English. I haven’t even got a few phrases, and I feel pretty shitty about that. Patrick’s Japanese…well I’m not quite sure yet. I shall let you know how that one goes. I am somewhat grateful that at least my sister will have a better idea.

Got some good books in the airport that I have been waiting on for a while and a nice new watch to replace the one I broke possibly a year ago.

Oh and the thing I forgot? Razors, I shall have to pick some up.

I’m in Japan. It seems kinda weird. I just never thought I would end up here. I mean its Japan!

Anyways in quite a sad piece of news, internet access is not a problem and indeed had I network card the hotel provides high speed access for free. Do’h

and I’m out of here.

As Tony Blair announces that security services are warning of terrorists threats on a daily basis, I am leaving the country.

My alarm is set for 06:00 (ugh). I am meeting Patrick at 08:00 and then we are off to Heathrow then Tokyo.

I am now getting excited, but I’m nervous aswell. I don’t quite know why but I am. Once I get going tomorrow I hope everything will settle down and I can look forward to a fucking great holiday. At the very least I’m not going to be in work for two weeks. Right now that is a damn good thing. Maybe I will be able to come back all refreshed and raring to go. Anything is possible I guess.

Seen as I have not had a proper holiday in over two years, I feel this is very overdue and could do me the world of good. I also still have some time left to take off by the end of the year so I’m looking forward to hitting Dublin for a weekend after I get back and still having time to do a couple of long weekends.

Hopefully with being up late tonight and especially after only getting five hours sleep last night I shall be able to sleep sometime into the flight tomorrow for a few hours. Given that we land at 10:00 on Wednesday. Not having slept by then will really screw up the day. Ah yes I need drugs at the airport. For a thirteen hour flight I want something to help me sleep.

I kinda don’t want to sleep. I’m reminded of when I use to go away with my family. The night before everyone would be up late getting the last minute stuff (like packing) done. When it was all ready it would usually be pretty late. Mind you we are talking 7 – 10 years ago, so by quite late I meant midnight. And then off to bed. There was always this atmosphere, which I can’t describe, well actually I can thinking about it. It was anticipation, Plain and simple. Right now I am actually a little happier as I just logged into my bank and the balance was healthier than I had expected.

If I didn’t want to be able to blog, I wouldn’t be bringing my laptop. I really wouldn’t, I could do with the break. But I really want to be able to run the blog of the time in Japan along with some photos so the laptop comes with me. Ideally I will dial up from the hotel every few days and update, I have just set up the phone numbers. In reality we shall see how it all goes. I suspect Patrick and I have different ideas of what we want from this holiday.

So ya know what with us being important people in work and all that (uh huh), Patrick felt the need to leave an emergency contact number. He left the number of the fucking pub he spent most of the lat week he was in Tokyo in, with words to the effect of leave a message and it will get throught to me.

Gobshite.

Usually when I travel I am somewhat organised. At least my suitcase is. I have never ever managed to travel anywhere in my life tho and still have my hand luggage organised by the time I get to the plane. It has just somehow gone all over the place.

Tomorrow will be different. I am going to be organised. This I swear…umm and yes I am going to pack shortly.
