escapism fucking rocks

Buffy made me laugh a number of times and moved the plot forward a little. All in all a solid episode with a great Mad Max homage

24 4pm – 5pm is still the most gripping show on tv. I really don’t get it. I’m never in a rush to sit down and watch it, I’m not all that pushed to get the next episode as soon as I can but then I watch it and its just as good as that was. Man the cast on that show is really really top notch. Yes, some of the stuff is far-fetched and would someone please just kill Kim but the writing can be really spot on.

( ) by Sigur Ros is the choice of the moment and its just amazingly beautiful. I have to get some more to a friend tomorrow or so but that also leads me onto a topic.

Piracy. I had a conversation about this with a friend a few days ago. I don’t mind it in some cases for example were I to watch say Buffy via encodes I download, I do not have a problem with this. I buy the dvds when they come out. WB will be getting my money for the show. I’ve given up on other shows like Enterprise as it doesn’t entertain me. I suspect I shall buy the dvds as it is Trek and handy to have around to pick one and watch. 24 isn’t something I bought on dvd and it isn’t something I would be planning to buy on dvd. Maybe if it was cheap in a sale but other than that I don’t see much re-watchability in it. So I don’t know maybe a little guilt?

Other stuff, Saturday or so I had this sudden feeling something had happened in work the day before. It got to me so much at first I nearly rang a couple of people to check, but I thought that was just silly. So when I went in this morning I was expecting some things to have changed. I did think it was that someone wouldn’t be there having had enough but turns out it was nothing. Strange.

More other stuff. Last night I cleaned out my old email accounts. The dead addresses from up to 5 years ago. They really get fuck all but spam in them. Out of about 1000 messages over 4 accounts (thank fuck for quick webmail) there were 3 mails I read. So that’s more than 99% shit. However one of the mails was just a forwarded joke from an old friend in Dublin. I had tried to send her an email before letting her know my new address (I can’t reply through old accounts) but never heard anything back. I noticed she used a new address this time, from a Dublin college that I was pretty sure was valid. So I sent off a quick mail.

One long response arrived this afternoon. I can’t remember the last time I talked to her, she moved to Galway just before I moved to London and her details were among the stuff I lost. I think it was sometime in the middle of 1999 when we were last in touch. Now her current address is in my address book and we have started catching up. That my friends is pretty damn fucking cool and I am happy I guess is the word about that. The internet rocks.

Speaking of the internet. This is the twenty-first century, where are my toys? I grew up on sci-fi and futuristic stuff and I was promised all these toys. Where are they? I want a constant VR internet. I want to be able to blog with a thought (or even a keyboard on my arm and some snazzy glasses). I want to be able to be online all the time, I want to be able to have an im conversation as if it were any other conversation while I’m on the bus. I want it all. I want to be wired up. Implants, plug ins, add ons, bring them on. Sign me up. I want to be wired.

Six degrees of separation and all that. I find it interesting to note that through one person if counted up I can be considered connected to over 860 people. Thats a big number

That’s about that for the random thoughts. They didn’t come out as eloquently as I had planned but….and yes, this time I am going to fucking well spell check my post. Many thanks to the person who corrected a misspelling in both my last posts.

cry havoc

There is something very soothing about unloading two full aircraft carriers into a neighbours capital city and its surrounding cities. Follow this up with a small transport and a few tanks will usually allow you to get a grip on the main land mass. Take three cities but only actually defend on…the capital. Let them take the other two back and in this case nuke a city I had just captured from a now dead enemy and then when they sue for peace: accept! This gives you their capital which means a major foothold in which to manufacture six or seven nukes and the same number of tanks. This should lead to another six cities falling to you and use whatever is left over from the carriers to clean up whatever units remain. One enemy pretty much off to a crippling start.

I am of course talking about Civ II. I started playing it again on Friday night and it rocks so very much. I have been playing one game since sometime yesterday and I have just gone to war with the strongest country in the game. It helped of course that about twenty turns ago I was able to convince the second strongest country to declare war. It only took a third of my treasury but what the hey it was well worth it.

The joys of war. Now to build up some troops and actually invade. I am facing a far superior force especially at sea. However I have four full carriers in reserve and fighters are pretty good at taking out ships. Unfortunately I am located very far away and I have to pass through a lot of trouble zones so plenty of escorts and sorties to check for trouble.

The word ludicrous (when correctly spelt) can be safely used to describe today.

I have new 24 and new Buffy. Those alone are saving you all from a ‘D Fens’.

I shall blog later. I have lots of stuff to mention. Some of it might even be interesting.

Beavis and Butthead do America. This is surprisingly funny, in fact it is very funny. I remember laughing so much I was in pain when I first saw the Halloween episode of the show where Beavis ate all the candy and became Cornholio. It was stunningly funny and made me laugh out loud without stop for the entire half hour. The producers obviously copped onto the reaction this brought on and the theme runs through the movie. Its made me laugh a number of times. And you know for comedy, I can’t really ask for more than that even if it is so very 1997 😉

Recently I have found myself going back to one specific memory over and over. It was a party in Dublin going on 5 years ago. I don’t remember exactly why but a group of us decided to get some beers and go to a flat down the quays and have a party. And so we did.
There was nothing special about the party…at least I didn’t think there was at the time. Looking back now perhaps there was. I still don’t know why it is coming back to me now.

Another memory just came back a moment ago, I was thinking about parties in Dublin and I remembered where I was for New Year’s Eve for 98/99. I had completely forgotten. That was a good night if like so many others a little strange.

Taken was ok for a first episode but it seemed very cliched and lacking overall. Still going to watch it but I was expecting more. Fairly underwhealmed by The Shining too but a great pre-Joker performance from Jack Nicholson.

Time to head to bed and read for a while I think.

Aha tonights tv is actually looking damn good. Taken begins on the beeb tonight and I have heard really good things about it so we shall start with that. The straight after is Kubrick’s The Shining which I have never actually seen. That is then followed up by either A Bronx Tale or Mean Streets. Guess that is my tonight sorted out.

I have to either run across the road to the little shop for some food or walk up to ASDA and pick up some food and other bits and pieces. I should go to ASDA but I might just be lazy and go across the road…then again the walk would do me good and get me out of the house for a while. Hmm decisions, decisions.

Ireland rated the most globalised country in the world.
