Last night was in the Cittie of Yorke. It’s an old pub with a lot of history and it looks it. The plan was to all meet up in there and then see how the night goes. We ended up leaving at around 10 and going back about 5 minutes later when we realised there was nothing else around to move on to. So we went right back in for another hours drinking and then stumbled home. It was, I feel I should note a really good night. The drinks were not only really nice, but dirt cheap too. We ran a kitty for the night and throwing in £20 got your drinks for the night and then some. It was all good.
Today I think will involve some sitting in the park in the sunshine with my discman and a book and a bottle of proper lemonade. It will also involve food fairly soon, perhaps a nice fry-up in the cafe across the road. I’ll watch the race later and maybe a movie at some stage. All in all it will be quiet and undemanding.
Oh something I meant to post about over the past few days. The following are a listing of albums which I consider to have changed my life in some small way.
Greatest Hits II by Queen.
Quite simply the first music I was really exposed to. When it’s quality of this sort, you just can’t go wrong.
Bad by Michael Jackson.
The first album I owned. My dad brought it back for me by request from some business trip he had been on.
Automatic for the People by R.E.M.
What can I say about this album, it’s just plainly a classic.
Ok Computer by Radiohead
I’ve blogged about this a few times, it spun my musical taste off into wondrous new directions.
Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros
Again, what can I say about this album. It’s beautiful
And I see Sigur Ros are playing London the first weekend of August, you know what that means. My wallet just got a little lighter. Whoo hoo, I’m already looking forward to this and I see them at Glastonbury in just two weeks time. r00t!
Microsoft have halted development on IE for Mac. They cite Safari as a big reason for this. It’s interesting, I’m looking forward to the 1.0 release of Safari and I expect that it should reach most Mac users in the near future. News.com story here
The soundtrack for the weekend has been Waking up the Neighbours by Bryan Adams. This was also one of my earliest records and it reminds me of simpler times. It’s not as dated as I thought it would be and some of the tracks on it are really good stuff. It’s got some good lyrics too and I’m a sucker for good lyrics. And yes I do quite like that song.
The new Harry Potter book comes out next week and of course there is way too much shite going around about it. The V has declared the topic off limits (yay) and seen as I’ve not read any of the others I have no intention of reading this one.
Yesterday I know I agreed to do something next weekend but I can’t think for the life of me what it was. I’m sure it will come back to me at some stage in the week.
Today’s word of the day is:
sarcasm
t noun [MASS NOUN] the use of irony to mock or convey contempt: she didn’t like the note of sarcasm in his voice.
—ORIGIN mid 16th cent.: from French sarcasme, or via late Latin from late Greek sarkasmos, from Greek sarkazein ‘tear flesh’, in late Greek ‘gnash the teeth, speak bitterly’ (from sarx, sark– ‘flesh’).
I was very happy to note while browsing in Forbidden Planet yesterday afternoon that there is a third Alistair Reynolds book available now. I shall pick it up when I finish Chasm City. And indeed a quick google has thrown up some more books. Cool.
Plans for the day have changed now. I’m meeting Nick in a while and we are going to spend the night in Rileys playing some pool.
