new albums

I had mentioned I picked up Rock Steady by No Doubt. I’m not sure of my opinion on it yet. I like the two songs that have been singles so far Hey Baby and Hella Good, the rest of the album is the usual No Doubt stuff with one other track that I suspect will be the next single. I’ll let you know which it is when I get to it this time round.

I picked up the last broadcast by doves yesterday aswell. I had heard a track before that I like and they were playing one I really liked Pounded in Virgin so I picked it up for a £10. Not bad actually, but fairly generic soft rock.

Anyways Saturday evening was Austin Powers in Goldmember. It was ok, a couple of pretty moments but nothing at all stands out as being excellent apart from the surprise start which was in fact excellent. The first one made me laugh, it was a good idea. The second one was ok…a typical sequel. I’m hoping the third was the last but given that it just set some records I doubt it

I’m going to tell you a story and then I need you to tell me whether or not I’ve engaged 16 people in a massive criminal conspiracy to defraud the public in order to win a Presidential election.
That line and the followup nearly had me in tears.

Gripping

A few days ago I said this:
I need something to read. I’m reading A Star Called Henry at the moment and its just not doing it for me. I’m in the mood for something sexy is the word I’m looking for I guess. I can’t think of anything else. I want to read the next American Psycho or Fight Club or God is a Bullet. Something raw and powerful with one hell of a fucking story behind it.

Yesterday I was wandering around town and I realised exactly what it was I was looking for. I saw an ad in the front window of a book shop for a book called “Lost in a book” and it struck me right then. That was what I was looking for. I wanted something powerful that would just grip me and I could go and loose myself in it. Books like that are pretty rare for me and I’ve not found anything yet. I did pick up a couple of books a new Clive Cussler (great popcorn reading) the new Peter David paperback (comedy popcorn) and a couple of crime thrillers that were on sale and looked mildly entertaining. Confession time though. I have at least 100 books lying around in front of me that I haven’t read. I bought them all because I wanted to read them and I still do. Just none of them are what I want now. Silly statement I know, they might just turn out to be, but nothing is grabbing me yet. There is a new book by Boston Terran in hardback that I might just pick up but we shall see.

In other news, it does look like I’ll get one of those ABC books I wanted. I’m in the lead on eBay for Top Ten Volume One hardcover. Paying a little over what I would have had I gotten it in the shops but not by all that much so I’m happy enough. The other one I wanted The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is at $66 dollars with a couple of hours to go and I am considering it. I suspect it is a little much and I might see if anyone at the WEF or V can hook my up with one. Having just checked what that is in sterling, it is too much. I suspect I will soon again hate eBay as my favourites from my comic collection become hardcover’s.

I have at last got a MetaFilter logon. Matt is allowing 20 new people a day at a specific time and I was one of the lucky few today. It’s one of the few sites a visit several times a day and its always worth a look.

It is good to see that I’m not the only person sharing the joy of the West Wing in their blog. I lent Dave the discs as soon as I finished watching them and I appear to have disturbed his sleeping patterns as a result. I’ll have to remember the third disc for tomorrow. The final episode of the first season is just amazing.

I meant to talk about this during the week. Rob Lowe is to leave the West Wing, he will appear in 16 of the 22 episodes of the next season (4) and that is that. Now in itself that is fine for a season, but overall the best description of his exit was something on one of the WEF Satellite forums. It was something like this.
Lowe leaves West Wing, Schiff, Bradley, Spencer and Janney stay. World turns.
Thinking about it, the show can go on without Sam Seaborn, of all the main characters his loss is the smallest hole. In my opinion the only departures that would kill the show would be Bradley Whitford’s Josh or Allison Janney’s C.J. The show could go on without John Spencer, it would be a lot poorer for it but they could bump Josh up to Chief of Staff and that *could* work really well for the show. C.J. is C.J., she is just not replaceable. Sure the Press Secretary is but I no-one could replace C.J. I think the show would feel a great loss of Richard Schiff’s Toby and indeed Martin Sheen’s Jed, but it could weather them with some effort.

Anyways as much as I will miss the character of Sam, at the moment it is over a year away before it shows here and it won’t make all that much of a difference until then. As long as Josh is still written aswell as he has been all along I’m sticking with the show.

It is worth noting that Josh is my favourite character but that I also have a soft spot for Janel Moloney’s’Donna.

Now I know that Alex will correct me in the morning when she sees this if I am wrong but…grammar? When referring to an actors character, should it be Rob Lowes’ Sam Seaborn or Rob Lowe’s Sam Seaborn?

UPDATE The lovely Alex has corrected me and it is Rob Lowe‘s Sam Seaborn

late again

1. How long have you had a weblog?
Since May 2001 but I started over in September 2001. That is why the archives only go back that far.

2. What was your first post about?
Something about starting the blog.

3. How many changes (name, location, etc.) of your weblog have there been, if more than one?
One; moving from the old blog to this.

4. What CMS (content management system) do you use? Do you like it or do you want to try something else?
BloggerPro, I’m lazy, it does everything I want it to do and I just have not bothered to get around to installing anything else sucessfully and keep on using it. One day I will move to Moveable Type.

5. Do you read people who have both a journal and a weblog? Or do you prefer to read people who have all of their writing in one central place?
No, I don’t see the point in looking in two places. Pick one and use that.

The Friday Five

I was going to have and early night and just read for a while before bed. Then I got a phonecall from a friend in the US and that put pay to that. I don’t really have much to talk about at the moment. Couple of posts to come on stuff I’m thinking about but nothing major.

Today.
Some comics
Some books
shoes
Austin Powers : Goldmember

Not really anything to say I guess.

So tonight turned into about 2 hours down the pub, a trip to McDonalds for a rather unhealthy dinner followed by a some evening shopping in the local supermarket. I needed various bits and pieces and figured: seen as it was on my way home it would save me a trip out of my way tomorrow.

I picked up Rock Steady by No Doubt aswell so that is my listening pleasure at the moment. Thinking about my last post reminds me that at times I really love my job.

Now I am going to go and look for Top Ten Volume One and The League of Extraordinary Gentleman Volume One in hardcovers on the hopefully not fickle interwebnet.

So we just had team meeting cause we couldn’t be bothered to actually do anything and went to the park to have ice-cream.

The line “ah no burn it with your cigarette first” referring to an ant caused no end of amusement.

Tonight I believe a very quick one after work and then I am going to go home and watch West Wing and read and not actually do anything. I just want to be somewhere away from this heat and stress free.

Nothing about my flatmate, but she is gone away until Tuesday and this is a good thing I am so looking forward to having the place to myself to sort some stuff out (and clean at my own pace).

Funny Story

A couple of days ago it was at the end of the day and I was talking to Dave, my boss. We were talking about some updates during the day about a project and it was a case of I really didn’t care at that stage it just wasn’t something I cared about right then and there. I was explaining something I had done to the code that was going to do something and my sentence literally descended into “blah blah blah”. He looked at me and we both just started laughing and seen as it was six, we both went home.

Yesterday, he said to me. You remember last night when you said “blah blah blah”, I knew exactly what you were saying and yeah it works.

Its funny and as normal these days blah blah blah has become a meme and is getting a good bit of use.

Its been one of those weeks.
