In many of his books, he writes an introduction or an afterwards (or both) and he will use the phrase &#8220;constant reader&#8221; or sometimes a variation. Unlike many others who try and use that or a similar phrase, it does not sound in any way contrived or patronising It always seems to work in his books. I don&#8217;t get why, but when I read one of his books, I expect to see that phrase before I actually get into the first chapter. Don&#8217;t  ask me how but it often  feels like a personal  connection to the books. The simple phrase helps to kick start my reading and my involvement in the story.
